History permeates this high mesa at the base of the Sangre de Cristo range. Well before Taos became known for its art colony, world famous ski area, and whitewater rafting on the Rio Grande, Taos Pueblo, home to Tiwa speaking Native Americans, was a major rendezvous for American Plains Indians.

The Taos Pueblo village has been continuously occupied for at least a thousand years. Today "the pueblo" is home to scores of talented Native American artists and craftsmen, whose jewelry, artwork, and pottery creations are internationally known. The United Nations has named Taos Pueblo a World Heritage site and has acknowledged its importance to the earth’s people. Plan to visit the pueblo while in Taos.
